Sunshine Center

Respect. Appreciation. Independence. Caring.

The Sunshine Center provides nutrition and transportation services to people 60 years of age and older in order to end isolation and allow them the live as independently as possible.

SENIOR DINING SITE (Temporarily CLOSED due to Covid restrictions): The Sunshine Center serves hot, nourishing meals Monday through Friday at Rose Lane in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. The delicious meals are for Seniors, age 60 and over, and various activities are planned at each site. Thanks in part to state and federal funding, the meals are provided at a reduced cost, with a suggested donation of $3.50.  Meal orders must be made one day in advance. No one is ever turned away because of an inability to pay.
For more information, call the Sunshine  Center (618) 242-7010 Option 6.

HOME DELIVERED MEALS are provided to seniors in Jefferson County (including the city of Mt. Vernon) who are homebound because of illness, physical or mental impairment, or otherwise isolated.  Hot, delicious meals can be delivered Monday through Friday, with frozen meals available for the weekends.  Home delivery is partially funded with  state, federal and United Way grants and meal recipients are asked to make a $3.50 donation per meal.  Meal orders must be made one day in advance. Home delivery in Mt. Vernon is provided by generous volunteers.
For more information, call the Sunshine Center (618) 242-7010 Option 6.

Remember, it would be difficult to shop, purchase and prepare a comparable meal for the amount of the suggested donation!  Both nutrition programs rely on receiving a donation for each meal. Without sufficient donations, there is no choice but to limit the number of meals provided.

TRANSPORTATION is important in order for seniors to remain active and maintain successful independent living.  This service is provided through a contract with South Central Transit to provide transportation within the city limits of Mt. Vernon, to registered riders 60 years of age and older, for a suggested donation.  Rides must be scheduled one day in advance, and can be for conducting business, shopping, doctor appointments, pharmacy visits, or events or activities at the Sunshine Center and the community.

For more information, contact South Central Transit (SCT) at (618) 242-0202.
